A Break in the Action

You know that women are always looked upon as nothing.

~ Nanyehi, 1781

Dear Friends,

There is literally a break in this action. I will not be able to post full length stories for a few weeks.  I broke my leg going downstairs a few days ago. I am resting in bed and healing. I am able to get around in a wheelchair for short periods of time. I would ask for your prayers for complete healing and renewed strength.

One good thing about this is that I am able to do a lot of reading. I finished a great book about Nanyehi (Nancy Ward, C. 1738-1822)) called a Beloved Woman by her Cherokee tribe. I hope to post the story in a couple of weeks. Nanyehi is an important historical figure combining feats of a warrior, motherhood, speaking, and a legacy as a Beloved Woman.

The words of indigenous women have rarely been recorded but because Nanyehi was involved in diplomacy and politics we do have some of her wisdom written down. I will share with you next time, or you can get this book which just came out in July of this year:

Serrano, Clara W. NANYEHI: The True Story of Nancy Ward and the Women Who Held the Cherokee Nation Together – The Untold Biography of America’s Most Powerful Indigenous Leader (Independently published, 2025)

In the upcoming weeks as I am able look for stories of more extraordinary Native American women leaders:

Lozen, A gifted Warrior, Apache, or Nde, (late 1840’s – 1889)

Sarah Winnemucca – granddaughter of Paiute chiefs. (c. 1844 – 1891)

Wilma Mankiller, First woman chief of Cherokee. (1945-2010)

I hope you all had a wonderful summer and will have a beautiful fall!!!

God bless you all,

Mary

You do it one at a time. You don’t win the masses, but they gradually realize you’re for real and that you have a lot to offer. You make those inroads, and the word starts to get around – that’s the way change happens.
